Question

Q: Are there any commercially available membrane systems at this time?
A: There are many commercial membrane systems available, with > 5 companies making reverse osmosis membranes for water treatment (Dow Filmtec, Hydranautics, Toray, Koch, CSM, Toyobo, GE Osmonics etc) and a comparable number of companies making MF/UF systems (Siemens, Dow, GE, Pall,... more

PhD Scholarship: Victoria University

From: Victoria University

Project: Pulsed Power Technology in relation to the control of membrane biofouling

Victoria University is currently seeking an outstanding Australian or overseas applicant for a Research Scholarship to undertake a Doctorate, commencing by 31st January 2012.

One PhD scholarship is available, funded by the NCED (National Centre of Excellence in Desalination). Applications close Friday 23rd December 2011

The role:  The successful PhD candidate will work in a group that will examine the efficacy of pulsed electromagnetic field (EMF) technology for inhibiting scale formation and biofouling of RO desalination membranes.  Whilst the EMF technology is already developed, the basis for the EMF action on scale formation, biofouling and microbial inactivation will be systematically researched.

The successful candidate will help to develop and test the experimental system, including assays for biofilm development, microbial growth and analysis - as well as membrane testing. In addition to support from members of the VU team, an internationally renowned expert in this field will also provide guidance during the project.

The person: Graduates with an Honours degree, H1 (above 80%) or H2A (above 75%), or a masters degree with demonstrated research potential in the fields of engineering and/or science are invited to apply.  Experience with membrane technology, chemical assays or microbiological techniques would be advantageous, but is not essential.
