Welcome from the Chair

On behalf of the Inaugural Board of the Membrane Society of Australasia (MSA), it gives me great pleasure to release the first newsletter of the MSA. Membranes are beneficial in many applications spanning from foods, water, energy and gas. The Australasian region has world leading activities in membrane research and commercial applications, and the MSA is being established to represent these activities. As part of this, the MSA aims to support a major bid in 2009 for Australia to host the International Congress on Membranes and Membrane Processes (ICOM) in 2014.

At this time, the MSA is being built through discussions and meeting where we receive input from our Patron (Prof Tony Fane) and diverse board which includes key names in membrane science and technology. Input is also received from our inaugural members to assist with its establishment. In the coming year, we aim to hold the first election. Please find in this newsletter our board of directors, MSA Vision and Mission and the new website address. Thank you for the time to learn about the new MSA. I look forward to hearing from you with your interest to be involved in the MSA and also greatly appreciate your constructive suggestions to help build our new society. Kind regards

Mikel Duke - Chair of the Inaugural Board

Establishment of the Constitution

The draft Constitution describes the Vision and Mission of the MSA:

Vision:

  • To promote collaborative engagements across the community to disseminate membrane technology to end users; and
  • To capture current research and industry involvement and highlight future trends;

The Mission of the MSA is to represent Membrane Science and Technology in Australasia realising that this will be aligned with societal needs. This will be achieved by:

  • providing an open forum for transferring and sharing technologies as well as capabilities within the members, industries and higher education organisations;
  • supporting multidisciplinary networking events;
  • providing leadership and mentorship in membrane science for the Australasian membrane community;
  • promoting opportunities for young members; and
